Rock Hard

On paper Brütal Legend - with its fusion of fantasy action and heavy metal music - might seem like a concept too far. But with a fella called Tim Schafer as the brains behind the game, it's pretty much guaranteed to be a huge success.

Schafer has a great track record. When working for LucasArts during the early 90s he was one of the chaps responsible for making legendary point-and-click adventure The Secret of Monkey Island such a hilarious experience. He then applied his writing skills to the sequel and another much-loved adventure called Day of the Tentacle before coming up with the award-winning Grim Fandango and Xbox classic Psychonauts. Now Schafer's development company Double Fine is set to tickle our funny bones once again.

Heavy Metal Mishap

Brütal Legend's story is quite bizarre. Its star, Eddie Riggs, is a well-respected roadie who, as well as having an exceptional talent in tuning guitars and setting up stage rigs, has a photographic memory for every Heavy Metal Album ever released - and all their song lyrics.

Following a stage accident that knocks Eddie unconscious, he wakes to find himself in a fantastical world where every album cover has come to life.

Following a stage accident that knocks Eddie unconscious, he wakes to find himself in a fantastical world where every album cover and lyric has come mysteriously to life, and humankind has been enslaved by an evil emperor, Doviculous, and his demon army The Tainted Coil. It's up to Eddie and the human resistance (led by Lars Halford and his sister Lita) to lead the human race into battle.

Axe Attack

It's all utterly ridiculous of course, and that's what makes Brütal Legend so much fun. Played in third-person perspective, Brütal Legend's gothic gameplay is pure rock and roll action madness. Eddie dispatches demonic enemies at close quarters with his broadaxe The Separator. Long range attacks are handled in gruesome style using Eddie's guitar weapon Clementine, and there's even the opportunity for vehicular combat thanks to Riggs' Hot Rod, The Deuce.

Long range attacks are handled in gruesome style using Eddie's guitar weapon Clementine.

As Eddie fights his way through hordes of demonic entities, he discovers environments unlike anything players have seen before. There are mountains made of amplifiers, and scenery constructed of motor parts. This game is heavy metal in every sense.

Brütal Legend's rock credentials are backed up by the stellar vocal talents of Jack Black, Judas Priest's Rob Halford, Motorhead's Lemmy and 80's huge-haired rock vixen Lita Ford, among others. And the game's soundtrack is a corker too featuring music from 75 bands, including Anthrax, Black Sabbath, Cradle of Filth, Def Leppard, Mastodon, Megadeth, Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Zombie, Saxon, Tenacious D, Whitesnake. In fact, pretty much the whole world of heavy metal is represented.

Brütal Legend also rocks online with a multi-player game in which the aim is simply to survive. The player achieves this both by entering into action-based combat and employing strategic thinking to control their army during an almighty Battle of the Bands.

Rockers will, needless to say, be over the moon about the release of Brütal Legend, but others too will surely find the game's unique brand of metal-madness thoroughly infectious.

Best game for current console generation without doubt. Amazing graphics, awesome word, nice characters, fascinating storyline and, ofcourse AWESOME METAL!!! HOURS OF AAAA quality metal music of all possible metal genres! Must buy if you love metal. But even if you don't game features nice open world, awesome hack'n'slash mode with metal elements and simply but challenging RTS elemets.

This game excels in graphics, music and gameplay, The world is vast and nothing looks like its been copy and pasted across, The sounds tracks are awesome and the voice acting is something to behold. Gameplay is a bit of a learning curve especially when you start stage battle but after mastering that it is great fun. Only downside found is the replayability for the single player campaign, once you finish the single player all that is left is to find a few missing things or complete the remaining missions. And starting from the beginning again will only yeild a difference if you want to change the gore and language level. If this game gets some DLC in the near future then it is a great find, but if you can't get online to play once completed it'll be a once in a while game. 4/5

this game was one of Tim Schafer greatest games infact this is his best game if the swearing and gore doesn't grab yout attension then the insane action and stunt will . this game has many different game play elements like Strategy,Action and Adventure and Roleplay because you earn Firetributes to upgrade your car, your moves, your axe and your gutair. overall i loved this game with one of the best storylines i have seen in games and from where it left off i think there should be a Sequel

Wow! Finally a game about heavy metal!!! Ive been waiting for something like this for a long time, and its amazingly cool, you can kill your enemies in mosh pits, run them over in your deuce (big cars modded with weapons) or melt their faces (literally!) with a guitar solo. There is a huge metal themed world in which missions, side missions and collectables can be found. There is so much to do on it and thats without mentioning the blood and gore! This game ROCKS, especially if you are a metalhead. 5/5 If you dont have it, get it right now!

Brutal legend is one legend of a game! Taking the hack and slash to a whole new level with the amazing graphics and open world as well as funny characters "Jack Black is a total side splitter in this game" As well as the other celebrity faces just adds to the experience. Even the RTS elements are amazing commanding armies of metal heads is just awesome! Soundtrack is a blast with metal bands such as Judas Priest and Motley Crue making the game that even more enjoyable! A must buy! 5/5 A total blast!
