Rock Band Unplugged challenges players to start a band and tour for fame and fortune while learning to master lead/bass guitar, drums and vocals – only this time as a one man band! The unique multi-track game design combines the overall artistic look, functionality and customization options of the Rock Band games, while also featuring enhanced options tailored specifically for the unique abilities of the PSP®.

Control all four instruments at once by hitting the coloured gems in time with the musical tracks – but you must switch between tracks and maintain note streaks for all four instruments to keep your one man band alive. In addition, Rock Band Unplugged’s in-game Rock Band Music Store used to purchase downloadable content will be the first game to enable the PSP’s in-game commerce capabilities.

We're jammin'

If you've played any of the Rock Band titles, you'll already know how much fun it is to jam along to some top tunes with a bunch of friends. You'll also be aware of the floor space required for an entire Rock Band set-up.

There's certainly no way you could whip out an Xbox 360, a guitar and a drum kit on the train and have a quick bash. Which is why the arrival of Rock Band Unplugged on the PSP is so welcome.

Forming your band

Get stuck straight into World Tour mode and your first job will be to form your very own, four-person band. You select and name your band members, choose a logo and are then ready for the road. On your journey to the top, you can visit the shop to buy all sorts of outfits and equipment, to tailor your band to your own specific tastes.

However, in the end, it's all about the music. If you've not played a rhythm action game before, the idea is simple. Coloured blobs fall down the screen and represent the notes and rhythms that need to be played. When a blob hits a certain mark, you strum or bash your instrument. Get your timing and consistency right, and your sessions will be, literally, music to your ears. And the better you perform, the more success you'll experience, which will see your combo playing ever-bigger venues, earning loads of cash and acquiring an impressive road crew.

One man band

What makes Rock Band Unplugged different from other games in the series is that, rather than taking on a single instrument, you have to control the whole band. But don't panic, it's not as ridiculous as it sounds. You can select instruments using the shoulder buttons and then play along with one band member for a bit. Once he or she's playing nicely you can switch to another band member and concentrate on getting their performance right. It's a neat mechanism, but if you find it a bit daunting, there's always a warm-up mode in which you can concentrate on a single area of the performance and mess up as much as you like.

Thanks to the Rock Band Unplugged Music Store, you'll also be able to download additional tracks.

Most importantly, the track listing is fantastic. There are 41 songs available on the disc, including the Killers' Mr Brightside, Tenacious D's Rock Your Socks, Foo Fighters' Everlong, Pearl Jam's Alive and classic tracks from such veterans as The Police, Jethro Tull and The Who. And thanks to the Rock Band Unplugged Music Store, you'll also be able to download additional tracks. The only downside is that there's no multi-player mode, but maybe that's something we can look forward to in future releases.

This game is fun, simple and addictive. Whether you're a Rock Band fan, Guitar Hero player or brand new to the rhythm game genre, this game will make your PSP come alive with music. Despite a lack of any extra peripherals, Rock Band Unplugged works remarkably well. You play as every member of the band, Guitar, Bass, Drums and Vocals and use the buttons to hits the notes sequences that come towards you on the screen. Due to the need to switch quickly between the different instruments, the game is very fast paced and keeps you on your toes throughout and with different and challenging game modes, playing the same set list over and over never gets boring. Not that you have to, as new songs are available each week from the PlayStation Store, so this game will never be overly repetitive. Fantastic! The only downside to the game is their is no multiplayer support, which I think is a shame as there could've been so much potential for it. I loved playing this game, a true musical masterpiece!

Rock Band Unplugged is basically a re-skinned portable version of Harmonix's previous game Ampltude. That's not a bad thing though, it was the best way for it to work for a portable console. Plus there's a lot of people waiting for a sequel to Amplitude and this is probably as close as their going to get to that. The game features the tour mode from the other Rock Band games along with the band creation. As I mentioned previously this is like Amplitude. There are 4 lanes, you switch between these with L and R, far left is Left, middle left Up, middle right Triangle, far right Circle. Overdrive is activated with Select or X. Though I find this awkward. Overall it works great. Rock Band Unplugged contains 41 tracks on the UMD, which is comprised of tracks from Rock Band 2, Rock Band downloadable content and 9 exclusive tracks. The majority of the tracks are good, but of course it depends on your musical preference.Then when you tire of the UMD tracks you have the dlc to turn to. 8/10

The demo is soo addictive!!! Cant wait to get this game! Great setlist! Was sceptical on how they would actually make it work in terms of controls, they have worked out great! Seriously looks like a good game!
